The NAME Of Jesus

Luke 2:21

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Luke 2:21  And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called JESUS, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

Dear fellow redeemed in Christ our Lord…  Holy Scripture declares that “at the Name of Jesus every knee shall bow” (Phil 2:10).  You may even know that in many Lutheran congregations, it is a practice to kneel at certain points of the Divine Liturgy, and even to bow the head whenever our Lord’s Name is used or at the words of the Creed that describe Jesus State of Humiliation – from His conception to His death and burial..

But there is more.  Holy Scripture declares that at the Name of Jesus “every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father” (Phil 2:11).  And so we do not carelessly or thoughtlessly use our Lord’s Name, for that would be taking our Lord’s Name in vain, a violation of the Second Commandment.  Neither do we say the name of Jesus Christ to strengthen our speech or as an exclamation, for that also would be to misuse the name of the Lord our God.

Instead, our tongues confess the Lord Jesus by using His Name in prayer, in praise, and in giving thanks.  We have access to God our Father only in the Name of Jesus.  Recognizing that fact, we are not ashamed of His Name, but pray through Jesus Christ our Lord.  For, “whoever calls on the Name of Yahweh shall be saved” (Joel 2:32).  This is why we petition our Lord, asking in the Name of Jesus for every godly help and blessing and benefit for our family, friends, relatives, co-workers, and fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

Why?  Why all this bowing and kneeling?  Why all this praying in Jesus’ name?  Why all this reverence and respect for the name JESUS to the extent that it governs both how we hear and how we speak our Lord’s Name?  It is more than respect; it is more than our way of worship; it is more than our way of showing what we think is important.

We honor the Name JESUS with our actions and in our speech because God the Father has exalted our blessed Lord and “given Him the Name which is above every name” (Phil 2:9)  For the Name JESUS means “God our Savior” or “God’s Salvation.”  And so the Name JESUS is not just our name for God or one way to identify the Son of God.  Our Lord’s Name does what it says: He saves.  By the Name JESUS – and His Name alone – all men have life.  By the Name JESUS – and His Name alone – the world continues to exist.  But most of all, by the Name JESUS – and His name alone – we have the full mercy of God and, in fact, we partake and share and commune in the God of heaven and earth.

We who have been baptized in the Name of Jesus have been wrapped up and bound and united in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  We have a common name with our God and Lord, and with each other.  We have a unity that transcends and overcomes and exceeds every economic, social, racial, ethnic, political, cultural, and educational barrier.  And all simply because of that Name JESUS.  It is the Name that makes us brothers and sisters in Christ; it is the Name by which we hold to God; it is the Name by which we have any hope and confidence in heaven.

But most of all, the Name JESUS is the Name by which we know and can be certain that the Lord our God is on our side, working for our good, seeing us through every trial, bringing us safely through death to life.  All because of the Name JESUS.

“You shall give Him the Name Jesus because He shall save His people from their sins.”  That is what the angel said when he appeared to Joseph.  “You shall give Him the Name Jesus…because He will be great and will be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God enthroned Him on the throne of His father David” (Lk 1:32).  That is what the angel Gabriel said when he appeared to Mary.

And so on the eighth day – in order to show that the day of salvation had dawned – and at the time He was circumcised – in order to show that His saving work would be accomplished in bloodshed – “His name was called JESUS, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.”

And now we know what this Holy Child is all about.  Now we know why the Son of God came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary.  Now we know what the mission, the purpose, the objective of this JESUS is.  He came not so much to make us better people; He came to save us.  He came not so much to make life easier; He came to live His life in and through us.  He came not to set us on the straight and narrow; He came to BE our way of life.  He came not to give us something to shoot for; He came to be the very means of God’s grace; He came to be the way in which our Father’s help and salvation is delivered into us.

Now the question is, what salvation do you hope for from your God?  For not only do you get the God you believe in, you also get the salvation and help and deliverance and mercy that you hope for from God.

If the salvation you hope for is nothing more than a comfortable life, a life free from physical distress, a life uncomplicated by stress or hardship, a life unburdened of crosses and trials, a life unaware of death and heartache – if that is the full extent of the salvation you hope for, then that is the salvation you will get.  But it is not the salvation bound up in the Name JESUS, the salvation that our Lord Jesus is and does and gives.

We desire the salvation the name JESUS lives up to.  It is a salvation from sin, from death, and from the devil.  It is a salvation through suffering, through death, through hell, through the grave.  It is a suffering that is bloodied and broken in our Lord’s own flesh.  It is a salvation rooted in the forgiveness of sins and found only in the Holy Christian Church.  It is a salvation that partakes in the communion of saints and rises above our present troubles and looks forward to the life of the world to come.

That is the salvation that the angel preached and proclaimed to Mary and Joseph and the shepherds.  That is the salvation John the Baptizer located in the Lamb of God.  That is the salvation that is found only in the Name JESUS.

And so, we honor, respect, give reverence to, and hold up the Name JESUS in our hearts and with our lips and knees and heads.  For His Name is Savior, His name is Life.  And “there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

In a few minutes, and for the last time in this calendar year, we get to receive in our Lord’s Supper everything that His Name promises: His own body and blood.  And with those things, we get His forgiveness, life, and salvation.  His Name does and gives what it says.

In the name of the Father and of the d Son and of the Holy Spirit.
